A motor Vehicle is stolen every 44 seconds in the United States. Do you know if you have coverage? Theft is covered in the Comprehensive section of the auto insurance policy, subject to your deductible. Comprehensive is usually a very reasonably priced coverage on your policy but it is optional on the policy, you are not required to carry the coverage unless you have a loan on your vehicle. Also covered under Comprehensive is vandalism, which can include damages from someone trying to steal your car.
I found a really good current article with statistics and facts about auto theft here at the Insurance Information Institute's website. Good news, thefts across the country are down over the last 10 years but between 2011 & 2012 there was a slight increase, hopefully the numbers in 2013 will reduce again. Massachusetts is not in the top ten states for theft but unlike Vermont, Maine & New Hampshire it is also not in the bottom ten states. California & Texas take the top spots for vehicle thefts in 2012 and Vermont & Wyoming round out the bottom with the fewest thefts for 2012.
