While we always recommend staying home when it snows we all not that is not always possible. With at the icy road conditions we've had recently, I thought it would be a good idea to brush up on emergency car kit items you may want to have if you end up on the side of the road due to an accident or other emergency.
Emergency accident supplies
- First aid kit with bandages, sterile gloves and saline solution
- Blanket
- Flashlight
- Pencil and paper to write down accident information including the names, license numbers, vehicle and insurance information of anyone involved in the accident
- Emergency flares and road markers
Emergency breakdown supplies
- Tire change kit, you should learn how to use this before you need it. Check the spare tire regularly to make sure it’s properly inflated.
- Emergency air horn or whistle
- Mini shovel to dig out of snow
- Small bag of sand/rock salt or kitty litter
- Extra clothing including a poncho, sweatshirt, socks, hat, and gloves to name a few
- Matches, hopefully you won’t ever need to start a fire but you never know
- Non-perishable munchies in case you have to wait it out for a while
Other supplies
- Small amount of cash for tolls or an unexpected expense
- Water (replace regularly)
- Toilet paper/napkins
- Small Swiss Army knife
- Bungee cords
- Jumper cables
- Extra wiper blades
- Windshield washer fluid and a quart of oil
- Cell phone charger
- Keep a pair of your old glasses in your car, you can’t drive if you can’t see!
- Any prescription meds you may need if you have to stay somewhere you did not plan
Sometimes the unthinkable can happen. Preparing for an accident or breakdown can save you a lot of worry if you find yourself in a less then desirable situation
